How It Started

Saras, founder of Jaambu Life — a brand owned by Navora Wellness — didn't set out to build a supplement brand.

That's not a hypothetical. It's the most common gap in the supplement industry today, and it has almost nothing to do with whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic. It comes down to something far more specific: which extract, at what dose, backed by which research.

This sits underneath a wider credibility problem we've written about before — how the functional nutrition industry split into synthetic and unproven natural camps — but it shows up most clearly at the ingredient level, one bottle at a time.

The Word on the Label Isn't the Whole Story

Ashwagandha is a useful place to start, because it's everywhere right now. Interest in the ingredient has surged over the past few years as people look for natural ways to manage stress, sleep, and recovery — and that demand has pulled hundreds of products into the market, all using some version of the same word.

Here's the part most labels don't make obvious: a clinically studied ingredient and a generic version of that same plant are not interchangeable. The research that built ashwagandha's reputation wasn't run on ashwagandha root powder in general. It was run on specific, standardised extracts — at specific doses, with specific extraction methods — and the results belong to those exact formulations, not to the word on the front of the bottle.

There's a more specific reason generic ashwagandha products vary so widely, and it isn't just marketing spin — it's botany.

That distinction exists because ashwagandha leaves contain withaferin A and withanone, compounds that research has linked to cytotoxic effects, with at least one study noting that withanone in particular can contribute to liver toxicity with overuse. Cheaper, non-standardised ashwagandha products don't always make this distinction — partly because root-only extraction costs more, and partly because most consumers have no way to check which plant part they're actually buying.

This is also why third-party certification matters more in this category than most people realise. A separate analysis of vitamin D products from a dozen manufacturers found actual content ranging from 52% to 135% of what the label claimed — and compounded versions performed even worse, swinging between 23% and 146%.

The pattern repeats across categories for a simple reason: there's no requirement that a brand prove its dose matches research before selling the product. A formula can legally say "contains ashwagandha," include a fraction of the studied amount, and still market itself as backed by clinical research — because technically, ashwagandha as an ingredient has been studied. The specific dose in that specific bottle usually hasn't been.

This is the gap that matters most. An ingredient may be clinically studied. The product sitting on the shelf containing it may not reflect that research at all — different extract, different dose, sometimes a different plant part entirely.

Bioavailability: The Other Half of the Equation

Curcumin tells a related but slightly different story — one about absorption rather than dose.

Turmeric has centuries of traditional use behind it. But standard curcumin, the compound most associated with turmeric's benefits, has a well-documented absorption problem. It clears the bloodstream quickly and very little of it reaches circulation in a meaningful concentration, regardless of how much is consumed.

Here's the standard story of post-workout recovery: you sweat, you lose salt, you drink something with electrolytes in it, you're fixed. Roll credits.

It's a tidy story. It's also about a third of what's actually going on.

A hard session doesn't set off one response in your body. It sets off three — and they run on completely different clocks. One is fast and everybody knows about it. The other two are slower, sneakier, and quietly responsible for a lot of how you feel for the rest of the week. Here's the whole picture on one timeline:

Curve shapes are illustrative of published exercise-physiology time courses. Exact magnitude and timing vary by individual, intensity, and duration.

Let's deal with the famous one quickly, because it's had enough attention, and then get to the two that haven't.

Resolves in ~2-4 hours

The one everyone already knows: fluid and salt

When you exercise, you heat up. To cool down, you sweat. And sweat isn't just water — it carries dissolved minerals, mainly sodium, which is why "electrolytes" became a marketing word.

The losses are real. Research in the European Journal of Applied Physiology puts sweat sodium loss somewhere between 460 and 1,840 mg per litre. The catch is how wildly this varies between people: sweat-testing data across tens of thousands of athletes shows some losing around 200 mg of sodium per litre and others over 2,300 mg — a more than tenfold spread between two people doing the exact same workout. Genetics, mostly. Some of us are just saltier, and there's nothing to be done about it except own it.

Sodium is genuinely the electrolyte that matters most here. It holds onto fluid, keeps blood volume stable, and helps you avoid hyponatremia (the specific danger of drinking so much plain water that you dilute your blood sodium — yes, that's real, and plain water can actively work against you). The "minor" electrolytes — potassium, magnesium, calcium — matter for overall balance, but the sports-science consensus is that they don't need heroic mid-workout replacement for most people.

So: hydration is important. Do it well. Sodium first. And now the part nobody puts on the label — because here's the thing about fluid loss: it's basically sorted within a few hours of drinking properly. It's the fast response. By the time you've showered and eaten, it's largely handled.

The other two responses are just getting started.

Lingers 8-12 hours

The invisible one: cortisol

This is the response you've definitely felt and almost certainly never blamed on the right thing.

Cortisol is your body's main stress hormone. Exercise is a physical stress, so exercise raises cortisol — completely normal, even useful. It mobilises energy and is part of how training makes you fitter. The problem isn't that it goes up. The problem is when it peaks and how long it hangs around.

Here's the sneaky bit: cortisol doesn't peak during your workout. It peaks roughly 20 to 30 minutes after you finish , then declines slowly over the following hours. Studies tracking hormonal markers after intense exercise have found cortisol elevated well into the first 24 hours of recovery.

Sit with the timing for a second. By the time your cortisol is hitting its highest point, you've already mentally filed the workout under "done." You've rehydrated. You feel fine. And one of the biggest hormonal responses to your entire session is only now peaking — and it's going to shadow you for hours.

You can feel dehydrated and reach for a drink. You cannot feel your cortisol curve. It just quietly runs the afternoon.

What does that actually feel like? It's the foggy, flat afternoon a few hours after a hard morning session. It's the "tired but wired" evening where your body wants to sleep but your brain won't power down. It's lying in bed at 11pm wondering why, having trained hard and eaten well and done everything right, you're staring at the ceiling. That's not a character flaw. That's a hormone with a long tail.

This is where a specific line of research gets interesting. Ashwagandha, an adaptogenic root, has been studied fairly extensively for its effect on cortisol — in randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials, a standardised extract has been associated with meaningfully lower serum cortisol versus placebo. It's a big part of why ashwagandha has become one of the most-studied stress adaptogens on the shelf.

Active for up to 72 hours

The slow one: inflammation

If cortisol is the response that runs your afternoon, inflammation is the one that runs your week .

When you train hard — especially anything with eccentric, muscle-lengthening movements like the lowering half of a squat, or running downhill — you create microscopic damage in the muscle. This is good, actually: it's how muscle adapts and gets stronger. But repairing that damage switches on an inflammatory response, and that process is in no hurry.

The two markers scientists watch are IL-6 and CRP. Work from Bente Pedersen's group in Copenhagen showed IL-6 can spike dramatically after strenuous exercise — after a marathon, occasionally up to 100-fold. CRP, the body's headline inflammation marker (the one your doctor measures in bloodwork), rises later and lingers longer. Research in PLOS One and the Journal of Applied Physiology , tracking these markers out to 96 hours post-exercise, consistently finds the inflammatory state hanging around for 24 to 72 hours after a hard session. It's exactly why the soreness famously shows up two days later rather than the next morning. (Delayed-onset muscle soreness: the gym's cruellest practical joke.)

Here's why that 72-hour number matters. If Monday's inflammation is still simmering on Wednesday, then Wednesday's workout doesn't start from zero — it starts on top of Monday's leftovers. That heavy-legged, slightly-flat feeling training on incompletely recovered muscles? That's not you being soft. That's genuinely unresolved inflammation from earlier in the week, showing up to your next session uninvited.

Curcumin — the active compound in turmeric — is one of the most-researched natural compounds for the inflammatory response. In randomised controlled trials, a high-absorption curcumin extract has been associated with a significant reduction in CRP. (Standard curcumin, amusingly, is almost useless on its own because your gut barely absorbs it — which is why the research uses enhanced-absorption forms. Turmeric latte fans, I have some difficult news.)

So, three responses. Not one.
